eSIM in the UK: London, the Tube, Coverage & Prices

By the VoyaSIM team · Updated October 7, 2026 · 10 min read

Quick answer

A travel eSIM is the cheapest, least-hassle way to get mobile data in the UK: VoyaSIM plans start at $0.50, install by QR code before you fly, and every plan connects to three of the four British networks — EE, O2 and Three — so your phone just picks the strongest signal. No airport vending machine, no £5 airport mark-up, no roaming day pass. Heading on to the continent? The same eSIM catalog has Europe plans that include the UK.

Why you need mobile data in the UK

Britain quietly moved everything onto the phone. London transport is tap-in with a contactless card or phone and planned in Citymapper; train tickets live in the Trainline or operator app and get scanned from your screen; restaurant bookings, museum timed entries, parking (RingGo) and even pub ordering run on QR codes and apps. Outside the cities, maps are how you find the footpath, the B&B and the last bus back.

Free wifi is everywhere indoors — hotels, cafés, every Pret and Wetherspoons, most stations — and nowhere outdoors. It also has a habit of asking for an email address and timing out. Treat it as a bonus for uploading photos, not as your plan.

Traveler tip

Install your eSIM at home on wifi before you fly. The validity only starts counting when your phone first connects to a UK network, so you land with working data instead of hunting for airport wifi to download a QR code your email can’t open.

02

The UK’s networks — and which ones your eSIM uses

The UK has four networks: EE, O2 (Virgin Media O2), Three and Vodafone — the last two merged in summer 2025 into VodafoneThree, though they still run as separate networks while they integrate. In Opensignal’s January 2026 report (data 1 October to 29 December 2025) EE took eleven of the national awards, O2 won Coverage Experience and Three had the fastest 5G. Every UK network has now switched off 3G: EE and Vodafone in 2024, Three by November 2024 and VMO2 through 2025, with the last areas going dark in early 2026.

O2Virgin Media O2; broadest reach by Opensignal’s coverage measureCoverage Experience award
ThreeNow part of VodafoneThree; strong 5G in citiesFastest 5G download speeds
VodafoneNow part of VodafoneThreeReported separately during the merger; no outright awards

Here is what that means for VoyaSIM: every UK plan in the live catalog connects to EE (5G), O2 (5G) and Three (4G). Your phone registers on whichever has the strongest signal where you are and can switch as you move — effectively the top three networks for the price of one. The exact list is shown on each plan page before checkout.

Hardware note: with 3G gone, any LTE-capable eSIM phone is fine; a very old handset that relies on 3G will show no service at all.

03

Coverage: London, the Tube, trains and the countryside

Ofcom’s Connected Nations report (data from July 2025) puts outdoor 5G from at least one operator at 97% of premises, and 4G across all operators at 89–90% of the UK’s landmass — 96% from at least one network. The gaps are geographic, not urban: rural indoor coverage sits at 78–84% of premises and Scotland has the lowest geographic coverage of the four nations.

  • London Underground: for a century it was a dead zone; since 2024 Boldyn Networks has been wiring the tunnels under a 20-year TfL concession. By August 2026 more than 60% of the 121 below-ground stations had 4G and 5G, with most Northern and Metropolitan line tunnels live and the whole network targeted for the end of 2026. Expect signal on the newer sections and dropouts on the rest — the Elizabeth line and the DLR are covered.
  • Intercity trains: coverage along the West Coast and East Coast main lines is good but patchy in cuttings and tunnels; most operators offer onboard wifi as a fallback.
  • Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia, the Lake District, Dartmoor: villages are covered, the hills between them are not, on every network. Download offline maps for walking days.
  • Northern Ireland: same networks and plans; cross the open border into the Republic and you are on an EU plan, so pick a Europe tier if the trip includes Ireland.

Practical upshot: with EE, O2 and Three all available to the eSIM, the phone will usually find one of them — that is the main reason a three-network travel eSIM beats a single local SIM outside the cities.

04

How much data do you actually need?

Budget 1–2 GB a day for a normal UK trip: Citymapper and Google Maps, train apps, WhatsApp, Instagram, a few short videos, QR tickets. Streaming on long train rides or hotspotting a laptop pushes you past 3 GB a day. For scale, a 30-second social video upload costs 80–150 MB and a video call burns 300–500 MB an hour.

Traveler tip

Ran out mid-trip? Top up from My eSIMs without reinstalling anything, or switch on auto top-up at checkout and we refill the plan when it runs low. That safety net is why we’d rather see you start smaller than overbuy on day one.

What UK eSIM plans cost

VoyaSIM sells two kinds of UK plan. Fixed data plans give you one bucket that lasts the whole validity window — from $0.50 for a 7-day starter to $28.90 for 50 GB over 30 days. Daily-renewing plans refill every day: 1 GB a day is $1.60, 3 GB a day is $3.10, and you stack as many days as your trip needs. All prices are in USD, with no roaming fees and no contract on top.

For comparison, a 30-day UK pay-as-you-go SIM costs £8–15 (about $11–20) in a corner shop and from £15 at the Heathrow vending machines, and an American or Australian carrier’s roaming pass is $10–12 a day. Our 10 GB plan works out to about $0.86/GB.

06

London plus Paris, Dublin or Amsterdam? Use a Europe plan

Since Brexit the UK is outside the EU’s roam-like-at-home rules for British customers, but the big continental operators mostly kept the UK in their free zones — Orange and Free in France, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom in Germany still let their customers roam here on their home allowance. If you are flying in from the EU, check your plan before buying anything.

For everyone else doing a multi-country trip, every VoyaSIM Europe regional plan includes the United Kingdom alongside 34–41 countries, from $1.60 for a week of data. Cross the Channel on the Eurostar and your phone drops onto the French partner network by itself — nothing to swap or re-scan. For a London-only trip the UK plan is cheaper per gigabyte; for London plus Paris and Amsterdam the Europe plan wins.

07

eSIM vs PAYG SIM vs pocket wifi vs roaming

Every option below gets you online in the UK. The differences are price, queueing and how much hardware you want to babysit. Third-party prices were checked in October 2026.

Cost comparison of UK connectivity options for a 7-day trip
OptionTypical cost, 7 daysThe catch
Travel eSIM$1.40–$8.60 total (1–10 GB)Data-only — calls happen over WhatsApp or FaceTime. Needs an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone.
UK pay-as-you-go SIM£8–15 (≈ $11–20) for a 30-day bundle; from £15 at Heathrow/Gatwick machinesSold in corner shops and at a £5 airport premium; you pay for 30 days whether you stay 7 or not, and swapping SIMs loses your home number for the trip.
Pocket wifi rental£28–85 (≈ £4–12/day) + Heathrow pick-upA second device to charge, carry and return; booth pick-up at the terminal after a long-haul flight.
Home-carrier day pass$84 (US, $12/day) · AU$70 Telstra Zone 2 / AU$35 OptusDaily caps and throttling — and a single background sync can trigger a full day’s charge. EU customers: check your plan, many still include the UK for free.

Pocket wifi still makes sense for one niche: a group of four sharing one connection with older, eSIM-incompatible phones. For everyone else the maths stopped being close a few years ago. If you want the full breakdown across carriers, we compared every roaming alternative here.

08

Setting up your eSIM for the UK

  1. Check your phone. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models all qualify.
  2. Buy your plan and scan the QR code. It arrives by email within minutes. Install at home on wifi: iOS → Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM; Android → Settings → Network & Internet → Add SIM.
  3. Label the lines. Set the VoyaSIM eSIM as your data line and keep your home number active for calls, texts and the bank’s verification codes.
  4. When you land: turn the eSIM line on and enable Data Roaming for it — and only it. The eSIM shows up as “roaming” on EE, O2 or Three; that is normal and costs nothing extra. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM.
  5. Signal bars but no data? Toggle airplane mode and give it a minute to register. Still stuck — check the APN settings from your confirmation email, or message support from the chat widget on this site.
Good to know

Data-only lines can’t dial 999 or 112 natively. Keep your home SIM enabled for emergencies; 112 works from any phone in the UK exactly like 999.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which UK network will my eSIM connect to?

Every VoyaSIM UK plan connects to EE, O2 and Three — three of the four British networks. Your phone registers on whichever has the strongest signal and can switch as you move, which matters most outside the cities. The exact network list is shown on each plan page before you pay.

Does the eSIM work on the London Underground?

Increasingly, yes. By August 2026 more than 60% of the 121 below-ground Tube stations had 4G and 5G, most Northern and Metropolitan line tunnels were live, and TfL and Boldyn Networks are targeting the whole network by the end of 2026. The Elizabeth line and DLR are covered. On older sections expect the signal to drop between stations and come back on the platform.

Do I need an eSIM if I’m coming from the EU?

Maybe not. After Brexit most big continental operators kept the UK in their free roaming zones — Orange and Free in France and Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom in Germany still let customers use their home allowance in the UK, subject to fair-use limits. Check your own plan first; if the UK is excluded or capped, an eSIM is the cheap fix.

How much data do I need for a week in London?

Most visitors use 1–2 GB a day — about 10 GB a week — for transport apps, maps, messaging and social. Light users who lean on hotel wifi manage on 5 GB; streaming on trains or hotspotting a laptop calls for a daily-renewing plan or the 50 GB bucket. VoyaSIM’s 10 GB / 30-day UK plan is $8.60 and you can top up without reinstalling.

Can I make phone calls with a UK travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only, so there is no UK phone number — calls happen over WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams, which all work normally, and your own number stays active on your home SIM. Data-only lines cannot natively dial 999 or 112, so keep the home SIM enabled.

Is 5G included?

Yes. VoyaSIM UK plans are marked 3G/4G/5G and connect to 5G on EE and O2 wherever it is available, at no extra cost. Ofcom puts outdoor 5G from at least one operator at 97% of premises, and 4G covers the rest of the trip comfortably.

Will it work in Scotland, Wales and the countryside?

Towns and main roads are covered on every network; the Highlands, Snowdonia, the Lake District and Dartmoor have real gaps between villages, and Scotland has the lowest geographic coverage of the four nations. Having EE, O2 and Three all available gives the eSIM the best odds of finding a signal — and download offline maps for walking days.

When does my plan’s validity start?

When your phone first connects to a UK network, not when you install the eSIM. Install at home on wifi days before the flight and the full validity is still waiting for you when you land.

What if I run out mid-trip?

Open My eSIMs and add a top-up — it lands on the same eSIM within minutes, no new QR code. Or switch on auto top-up at checkout: we add the same plan again when you have used 85% (or more days when a daily plan is on its last day) and send you a note each time, up to five times.
